QUESTIONS:
Wood Treatment
No. The degree of the finish shine is due to the amount of light refracting back through the finish. In the production of finish, all degrees of reflection begin as high gloss. To achieve the desired sheen a light blocking agent is added. The more this agent is added the less the reflecting property is achieved. High gloss has the least or none of this agent added. Satin or mat has the most of this flatting substance. This has nothing to do with strength of the finish.
Yes. Most store brands have silicone added to make the surface smooth. This additive attracts dust and makes repairing damage problematic. Silicone reacts to and rejects the new finish. That can make refinishing and repairing a problem.
No. Most new furniture has a finish that will last for years
Wood Damage:
Yes, the white spots can be repaired. The cause of these white rings is most likely moisture. The white or milky area is the result of water molecules trapped in the finish. They almost look like clouds. This is trapped moisture from standing water or heat transfer (potted plants – Coffee cups, hot pizza boxes).
